Letter From Renate Schmidt to Amir-Entezam (February 15, 1995)

Dear Mr. Entezam:

I was deeply touched and greatly outraged upon learning of the terrible conditions under which you have had to live in prison.  Now for many years, I greatly admire your tremendous courage and your unbending will.  I thoroughly applaud your efforts to establish a democratic society in Iran through the use of non-violent means.

The tortures and the feign executions that you have suffered are a flagrant violation against all human rights.

I believe the terrible conditions of your imprisonment among the following points are all crimes against humanity:

1. the overcrowded conditions of the prison,
2. the policy to deny you the right to sleep,
3. the denial of your right to postal access for 13 years and
4. a two-year isolation – imprisonment.

I will therefore with all means at my disposal try to initiate a fair trail [sic], according to your countries constitution.  I will further demand a defense lawyer put at your disposal as well as an open and fair trial.

My party, the Social Democratic Party of Germany, SPD, will continue to promote human rights not only in Iran but in the entire world.
I hope that you soon have your opportunity for a fair trail [sic].

Yours sincerely,
[signed]
Renate Schmidt, Member of Parliament
